The Fairfield County Sheriffs Department was in place until the year 2000 when a majority vote eliminated the position of sheriff in Connecticut counties. It served as a law enforcement for the county with none or lack of a local law enforcement agency, but all of the areas in the county (except for a few exceptions in the northern part of the county which are now served by Connecticut state police) had local law enforcement agencies that were adequate for their needs, thus the department's main service acted as security for the county court houses and transportation of prisoners for the county until the year in December 2000 when Connecticut eliminated the position of sheriff in all Connecticut Counties.

Now, instead of a county sheriff, Fairfield County has its own county branch of the Connecticut state Marshall which carries out legal warrants put out by the Connecticut state court system. Even though any form of County Government has been taken away from Connecticut Counties, there is still an individual court system in place for each county.
