Fairfield Country Day School (FCDS) is an independent day school for boys in Fairfield, Connecticut. Founded in 1936 by Laurence W. Gregory, the school moved to its present location in 1946, and has approximately 278 students. The school is noted for its academic program geared to the needs of boys, and its groundbreaking efforts to incorporate technology into everyday student life. The school also emphasizes the fine arts and athletics. Helping families develop the character of the boys is an important part of the school's mission. Upon leaving FCDS, boys enroll at competitive independent boarding and day schools, as well as local public high schools. In the last two years, boys have been accepted into Avon, Andover, Choate, Deerfield, Greens Farms Academy, Groton, Hopkins, Middlesex, Salisbury, St. George's, St. Paul's and Taft, as well as many others.

[edit] Curriculum

Fairfield Country Day School is broken down into two distinct student bodies: a lower school and an upper school, the former defining all students in grades K-4 and the latter defining those in grades 5-9. The lower school makes up about 1/2 of the student body, and each student is expected to attain mastery over basic mathematical concepts and engage in discussion of books and other topics. In upper school, a student's responsibilities are expanded. FCDS uses a ten day schedule to designate the class schedule for each student for a particular day.

[edit] Humanities

From Kindergarten on to fourth grade, students are required to study basic Spanish concepts. In grades five and six, students begin a basic study of Latin along with a continuation of Spanish. In seventh grade, currently students are able to choose between French, Spanish, and Latin – and whichever language a student chooses, he is expected to continue that language until he graduates. History is of particular interest to the school, and such social science classes begin in grade four. In Grade eight, students study Physical Science, and in Grade 9, Biology. History studies begin with an approach to Mesopotamia and conclude with Vietnam and present-day affairs. English, in addition, is a main part of a student's work load, as typically a class reads three books a year. From grades six to nine there is usually a trimester devoted to grammar. The Math curriculum includes Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Honors Geometry.

[edit] Arts

Music and Art class are required aspects of a boy's day. Fairfield Country Day has required art and music classes in all grades. All boys in grades K-6 are required to participate in a choral group. It is suggested, but not required, for boys in grades 7-9 to join a choral group.

Select students' art work is displayed all year. Upper-school students can join a string ensemble, a cappella group, or a bell choir. During the fall upper-school students can take part in a One-Act Play. During the late winter and early spring every year the 7-9 grade students can participate in a full-length Broadway musical. Recent productions have included South Pacific, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, and Beauty and the Beast. The Arts are a large part of school life for FCDS boys.
