[edit] Story
The player takes control of Conrad B. Hart, the hero from Flashback, who as a consequence of the last game has been forced into cryo sleep in a spaceship, floating aimlessly through space. He is found by his old enemies, the Morphs, who imprison him in the Lunar prison of New Alcatraz.
There he meets John Connor, a mysterious man who helps him escape.
After barely having escaped, both of them teleport to Shadow, the headquarter of the Mandragore. They meet Sarah Smith, leader of the resistance. Their missions and adventures lead Conrad to Pluto where he meets the native species of Ancients, who were once destroyed by the Morphs. Gaining the assistance of the mysterious Ancients Conrad must fight off the Morph invasion, not knowing who he can trust.
[edit] Gameplay
The game has very different gameplay to its predecessor Flashback because, unlike Flashback, it is in full gouraud shaded 3D for PC and fully textured 3D for the PlayStation. It features an over-the-shoulder viewpoint, with almost no platform sequences. The style of the game is action adventure in a similar style to the later Tomb Raider series, although it bears a more superficial resemblance to the likes of Metal Gear.
Fade to Black did not receive such a positive critical response as Flashback[1], because of its different gameplay, original execution and somewhat clumsy interface, although the PlayStation version did sell enough copies to go Platinum.
[edit] Playstation (PS1) Port
The Playstation version was also released as a download on the Playstation 3 and Playstation Portable in the EU on January 31st, 2008.
[edit] Cancelled Sequel
A third game in the series, Flashback Legends, was in development by both Delphine Software International and Adeline Software International for a planned released in 2003. Unlike Fade to Black, it was to be a 2D side-scroller game similar to Flashback, but without the flip-screen transitions of that game. It was targeted exclusively for the Game Boy Advance.
The game was cancelled when the company went bankrupt and ceased operations at the end of 2002. However, a prototype ROM was leaked and spread over the net at some point. It features all 16 levels with minor glitches and only one music track for the entire game. Despite its apparent multi-language options, the beta can only be played in French.
