Fabiola Leon Velarde

FABIOLA LEÓN VELARDE obtained her DSc. Degree from the Faculty of Sciences of the Peruvian University Cayetano Heredia ([UPCH[1], 1986), she is an investigator who has devoted her contributions and publications to the field of the biology and physiology of adaptation to high altitude. Before assuming the Vice- Presidency of Research of the UPCH, she was Head of the Department of Biological and Physiological Sciences at the same University. At the present time she is also, Head of the Unit of Oxygen Transport of the “High Altitude Research Institute (IIA-UPCH)” and Director of the Laboratory of Comparative Physiology of the Faculty of Sciences. She has also been, Past-Vice president of the [International for Society Mountain Medicine][2] and, during nine years has been doing research studies with the Human Respiratory Section of the [Laboratory of Physiology of the University of Oxford][3], United Kingdom, where she has been invited "Fellow" of the "Queen's College". At the moment, she is also Associated Investigator of ARPE/UFR of Medicine of the University of Paris XIII, France.

She has been consultant in diverse national and international institutions, including the International Center of Research for Development (CIID), of Canada, on the problems of health in the Andean Region and of the Labor International Organization (OIT). In the last years she has participated like Consultant in the [Antamina][4] Mining Project (Huaraz, Peru) and at the Andean Organism of Health (Agreement Hipólito Unanue, Andean Community) (Lima, Peru). At the present time, she is Member of the Review Committees from the National Council of Sciences [CONCYTEC][5] (Lima, Peru), from Chile (CONYCET), and from the National Agency of Scientific and Technological Promotion - [SECYT-FONCYT][6] (Buenos Aires, Argentina) as well as from the [International for Foundation Sciences - IFS (Stockholm, Sweden)][7].

Dr. Leon-Velarde has a vast scientific production that has been published in more than 80 summaries and more than 100 articles in international scientific magazines and is author of chapters in several books on altitude sickness and related specialities particularly in the Andes. She is member of important scientific academies such as the [American Physiological Society][8] and the [Academy of Sciences of Latin America][9].
