F3 is a project name for a class of cruise ships under construction for Norwegian Cruise Line. The present order for two ships were optioned in September 2006, and confirmed in November 2006. An option for a third F3 was not exercised. The first ship is scheduled to be delivered in January of 2010. The second ship is due for delivery in 2011.
[edit] Vessel Class
The F3 class will surpass the Jewel class as NCL's largest vessels by a margin of over 50,000 gt. The F3 represents the "third generation" of Freestyle cruising vessels and their size allows NCL to now have two ships that are in a "mega-class" of their competitors at Royal Caribbean International and Carnival Cruises. Although few details have been released about the F3, plans call for 4200 passenger berths per vessel, with 100% of outside cabins having balconies. In total, the ships will have 1415 balcony staterooms and suites. Additionally, NCL promises that these new ships will have 60% more passenger space than their current largest ships.[1]
The F3 class ships will be built by Aker Yards at the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France. The last ships delivered to NCL that was not at least partially built at a German shipyard was the Windward of 1993. Since that date and until this order, NCL's newbuildings have been built at the German Meyer Werft, Lloyd Werft, Bremer Vulcan and Aker MTW shipyards.
