The Fédération Française d'Etudes et de Sports Sous Marins (FFESSM) is the main diver training organization of France and was formed in 1955. It has 160,000 members and consists of 2200 clubs. It is one of the founding members of the CMAS (confédération mondiale des activités subaquatiques, world confederation of subaquatique activities). The other French federation are the FSGT (Fédération sportive et gymnique du travail). In France, there is two associations of professional instructors: the ANMP (association nationale des moniteurs de plongée) which has created the CEDIP and the SNMP (société nationale des moniteurs de plongée).
