Eyez on the Prize
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Eyez on the Prize was released April 13, 1999 by label record Trump Tight[1]. This compilation was planned as a soundtrack to an independent film of the same name which Rodney Hisatake intended to co-produce. The film was to follow the struggles of four fictional brothers migrating from American Samoa to California, illuminating in particular the hardships of two of the brothers who become enmeshed in illicit drug economies. Due to insufficient funding, the film has not, as yet, been made. Paul Gilroy's remarks in Against Race on the changing category of freedom in Black popular culture emphasize that the Eyez on the Prize compilation displays a marked trend towards the representations of the hyper-physical and commoditized body that Gilroy's notes (although it substitutes a Samoan body for an African-American one), while retaining the title of a popular documentary series about the U.S. civil rights struggle.[2]
