[edit] Same thing as an extender?

I ran accross extenders when taking a look at the canon website [1], but when I tried to find the wikipedia article I couldn't find anything, anywhere, about an "extender". Is it the same thing as an extension tube? It looks like it, but being totally unfamiliar with either I'm quite sure.
