[edit] Company History

The first Extra Supermarket has been opened by the Schaper-Gruppe in Düren in 1970. The main part of the branch network was in Lower Saxony and North Rhine Westphalia by this time. Extra was integrated into the Asko-Gruppe in 1987, so Extra has been belonged to the Metro Group since 1986. The two companys Real and Extra has been brought together by the Metro Group in 2004, but in the view of the customers, they are separate companies. The Metro Group said they wanted to sell Extra to the REWE Group in 1. July 2008. The name Extra will disappear this time and the markets will be named REWE. The franchise supermarkets Comet and Bolle, that belong to Extra will keep their names. To improve the sell of Extra, the Metro Group segregates the two companies Real and Extra, and now the company's name is Extra Objektgesellschaft mbH.

[edit] Products on offer

1000 commodities are saled under the name TiP Toll im Preis, what is Fantastic priced in English and Fine Food. These commodities are cheaper than the others. By this concept Extra tries to compete with discounter markets like Aldi and Lidl.

[edit] Locations

You can find Extra supermarkets in towns with 8000 habitants. They are central and they have many parkings. The 252 markets are in Northrhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, Lower Saxony and Berlin and they are about 2000-3000 m2. Little supermarkets are 800-1000 m2 and they are named Comet and Bolle. They live under the code Ihr frischer Nachbar, that means Your fresh neighbour in English. Extra delivers these markets, but they don't have the same leaflets. This concept is named Extra Franchise.

[edit] Self scanning terminals

Among the "normal" register cashs Extra has launched Self scanning terminals since 2007. The customers scan at four terminals their commodities themselves and put them into a plastic bag which is on a scale. It controls the weight of the commodities. A sale assistant controls the operations on a computer. If there is a customer who wants to buy alcohol or cigarettes the sale assistants has to control the age of the person. An alarm fuse should stop thieves.
