Shanghai currently has 6 city elevated roads (including 2 ring roads) and 18 expressways (including 2 ring expressways).

[edit] City elevated roads

Most city elevated roads are in downtown Shanghai, and most of them are elevated above ground level. The distance between exits on city elevated roads is much shorter than on expressways. The 6 city elevated roads are all free, but some kinds of cars and trucks are forbidden, as are pedestrians and bikes.

[edit] Inner Ring Road

Most way of Inner Ring Road is elevated on Zhongshan Road. The inner ring road is: Zhongshan Nan Yilu-Zhongshan Nan Erlu-Zhongshan Xi Lu-Zhongshan Bei Lu-Ningguo Lu-Huangxing Lu-Yangpu Bridge-Luoshan Lu-Longyang Lu-Nan Pu Bridge-Zhongshan Nan Yi Lu. Luo Shan Road and Longyang Road are not elevated sections and pedestrians and bikes are permitted to use them. The Inner Ring Road is 48km long and was completed in December 1994.

The Middle Ring Road is a city expressway that includes tunnels, ground level road and elevated road. The northern section and most of the western section have been completed, while other sections are still under construction. It is a motorway. The northern part of the Middle Ring Road is an elevated road, while the western part was constructed below the surface as a 'city fastway'.

Shanghai uses an alphanumeric system for naming expressways. It is "A" plus a number. From Yingbing Avenue (A1), in a clockwise direction, other expressways are given succeeding numbers (A2, A3, etc.). For ring expressways, the designations A20, A30, A40, etc., are used. For expressways connecting to other provinces, a double naming system of "A" Series plus traditional names is used, with the traditional names being most widely cited; for example, "Huning Expressway (A11)".

Also known as the "Outer Ring Road".

Also known as the "Suburb Ring Road". The western part of the A30 Road (A5 Road to Xinnong Interchange A6 Road) is also part of national expressway G010 (Tong San Expressway).

Also known as "Yinbing Avenue". It runs from A20 Longdong Avenue Interchange to Pudong Airport.

Also known as the "Hulu Expressway". It runs from A20 Longdong Avenue to Donghai Bridge.

Planned Expressway Line 5. It would run from A20 to Jiangsu Province Boundary.

Also known as the "Xinfengjin Expressway". It runs from A20 Xinzhuang Interchange to Fengjing Interchange (Zhejiang Province Boundary).

Also known as the "Jiajin Expressway". It runs from A4 Shanyang Interchange to Jiangsu Province Boundary, where it connects with Jiangsu's Yanjiang Expressways. The northern part of the A5 Road (Jiangsu Province Boundary to A30) is also part of national expressway G010 (Tong San Expressway).

Also known as the "Xinwei Expressway". It runs from A30 Xinnong Interchange to Jinshanwei Dock. It is also part of national expressway G010 (Tong San Expressway).

Also known as the "Tingfeng Expressway". It runs from Xingta Interchange to Xinnong Interchange.

[edit] Huhang Expressway (A8 Road)

The Shanghai section of the Huhang Expressway is called the A8 and runs from Xinzhuang Interchange to Zhejiang Province Boundary. The A8 Road is also the Shanghai section of the Shanghai-Ruili Expressway (G065).

The A9 Road is the Shanghai section of the Huqingping Expressway, and runs from A20 Huqingping Interchange to Jiangsu Province Boundary.

[edit] Huning Expressway (A11 Road)

The Shanghai section of the Huning Expressway is called the A11, which runs from Zhenbei Road Interchange to Jiangsu Province Boundary. The A11 Road is also the Shanghai section of the Hurong Expressway (G055) and the Jinghu Expressway.

Also known as the "Hujia Expressway", and once called the "Hujialiu Expressway", it now runs only from Zhenbei Road to the A30 Road.

Also known as the "Yanjiang Expressway (2nd Phase)", it takes the following route: A20 Road-Baoshan District-Chongming Island-Jiangsu Province Boundary.

Also known as the "Chongqi Expressway", it includes the Shanghai Yangtze River Tunnel and the Shanghai Yangtze River Bridge and Chongqi Bridge. It takes the following route: A20 Road-Changxing Island-Chongming Island-Jiangsu Province Boundary. The A14 Road is also the Shanghai section of the Shanghai-Xi'an Expressway, connecting with Jiangsu's Ningqi Expressway.

Also known as the "Airport Expressway", starts from Pudong Airport, connects the Shenjiahu Expressway of Zhejiang.

Also known as the "Suhu Expressway", starts from A5 Road, connects the Suhu Expressway of Jiangsu
