The Explorer is a weekly newspaper covering Northwest Tucson. Its coverage area includes the towns of Oro Valley and Marana and the communities of Catalina Foothills, Casas Adobes, Catalina, SaddleBrooke, Tortolita, Oracle, along with neighborhoods in the City of Tucson and Pima County.
The Explorer was originally established in 1993 as a periodical for Oro Valley. It later became known as the Northwest Explorer as its coverage expanded beyond Oro Valley to cover the larger, rapidly-expanding area of Northwest Tucson. In 2005, the Explorer dropped the "Northwest" from its name as it began to cover Catalina Foothills, a community situated north of Tucson.
The newspaper provides news coverage, features, sports, columns, and an opinion section. Its news coverage primarily focuses on local governments, schools and businesses, while its sports section includes coverage of local high school and youth sports as well as major golfing events and other recreation trends. The Explorer also contains the weekly Life entertainment section, which includes a variety of features, arts and entertainment information, a Q&A section and numerous columns.
In 2007, the Explorer added high school interns to the staff, promoting youth interest in the trade and increasing local involvement. College-level interns have since followed.
