Evosmos

Evosmos (Greek: Εύοσμος) is a municipality in the west side of Thessaloniki, Greece. It has a land area of 9.927 km². The population is 52,624 (2001 census) and now it is estimated to be around 100,000 in 2005 because of the rapid development of many buildings at the northern part of Evosmos where many people search for a place to live. Most cafes and general the center with the big square and the city hall is near the church "Evagelismos". The most known cafes in the area are IL POSTO, KaKa and Jollity and at night they can also be a bars. Other known places are Devido and Nik a famous place to have excellent gyro, the Greek food. The center street of Evosmos is Megalou Alexandrou street.In Evosmos also exist a municipal cinema in the cultural centre of Evosmos. Currently, there are 3 churches in the area of Evosmos. The oldest one is Agios Athanasios which was built in 1818. The central one is Evagelismos. The third one is Three Hierarchs (Greek: Οι Τρείς Ιεράρχες) which is a new building.

In Evosmos exists big athletic activity. In the northern side of Evosmos, in the said New state (in Greek Νέα Πολιτεία) exists the Municipal Athletic Centre of Evosmos (in Greek Δημοτικό Αθλητικό Κέντρο Ευόσμου) with closed gym of basketball and volleyball. It has been used occasionally as seat of the volleyball team of Iraklis. Still for the Juniors World Championship Basketball 2003 that became in Thessaloniki were carried out the fights of first phase of groups where Greece conquered the third place in the tournament. Still in Evosmos exist certain athletic associations with the acquaintance the football club Agrotikos Asteras that participates with big success in the Second national category of Greece. Other small clubs are Aias Evosmou, A.E.Evosmou and Ethnikos Evosmou that participates in the amateur categories of prefecture Thessaloniki. Evosmos has removed big names in the space of sports as in the old days with the footballers Ntino Koui and Giorgos Firos where they began their career from Agrotikos Asteras and together excelled in Aris Thessaloniki and in Greek national football team. Another famous athlete from Evosmos is the basketball player Nikos Hatzivrettas (nephew of now mayor of Evosmos Dimitris Hatzivrettas) what he began from the basketball team Aias Evosmou and now he fights with success in the Panathinaikos basketball team and in Greek national basketball team. The fact is that the population of Evosmos increased when refugees came from Minor Asia and established their houses in the area. The first name of Evosmos was Harmankioi (in Greek Χαρμάνκιοι). In 1953, Harmankioi became an independent community and took the name Neos Koukloutzas (Greek: Νέος Κουκλουτζάς) and since 1955 it was given the name Evosmos. Literally, Evosmos means a place that smells nice because in the past existed a slime in the region where it smelled bad, thus afterwards the disappearance of slime left also the stench and the region smelled nice.
