Evergreen (band)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Evergreen is a name that has been used by at least two bands, one an emo band from Los Angeles, CA, and the other, a post-punk band from Louisville, KY.

[edit] LA incarnation

Evergreen was a Southern California underground post-punk band from the early-to-mid 1990s.

They had several releases over their lifespan, including two 7"s, a split 7" with Los Angeles hardcore/screamo band Still Life, and a much sought 12", most of which was released on Anomaly Records. They still have a 7" out on San Diego's Gravity Records. They are notorious amongst record collectors due to the rarity of the "7 Songs" LP (Anomaly Records).

Band members include Aaron Calvert (cousin of Todd Calvert, drummer/percussionist of Gertie Fox) on guitar (now in Winfred E. Eye), Andy Ward on bass (also of Antioch Arrow), and Jason Boesel on drums (now in Rilo Kiley[1]).

[edit] Louisville incarnation

The LA Evergreen was active at the same time another band called Evergreen was active in Louisville, KY. This Evergreen (their original name was 'Cinderblock') was initially a Bad Brains/Minutemen inspired quartet featuring Tim Ruth, Troy Cox, Dave Pollard and Matt Tucker. This line-up released one single and a cassette on Self Destruct. Ruth and Cox later revised the group with former Undermine vocalist Sean McLaughlin and Britt Walford (drummer in Squirrel Bait, Slint, the Breeders, and the For Carnation among others). This more minimalist blues version released a 7" (1994) and one LP/CD (1995 on The Cocktails Hi-Ball label) along with two others co-released between Ghetto Defendant and Black Planet Records. The LP was later reissued by Temporary Residence Records in 2005[2][3]. The LP was recorded by future LCD Soundsystem and DFA creator/producer James Murphy.
