Evelyn Pierrepont, 2nd Duke of Kingston-upon-Hull
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
General Evelyn Pierrepont, 2nd Duke of Kingston-upon-Hull, KG (1711 – 23 September 1773) was the only son of William Pierrepont, Marquess of Dorchester (1692–1713) and his wife Rachel Bayntun (1695–1722).
His paternal grandparents were Evelyn Pierrepont, 1st Duke of Kingston-upon-Hull and his wife Mary Fielding, daughter of William Feilding, 3rd Earl of Denbigh. His maternal grandparents were Elizabeth Willoughby by either her husband Thomas Bayntun of Little Charfield of Chalfield or her lover John Hall of Bradford.
Pierrepont was the subject of the first extant reference to the game of cricket (sport) in Nottinghamshire. According to cricket historian Peter Wynne-Thomas, the letter is dated 1751 and "comments that the Duke of Kingston at Thoresby Hall is spending all his time practising cricket because he is to play for Eton v All England in three matches -- in fact he opened the batting."[1]
On 8 March 1769, Pierrepont married Elizabeth Chudleigh, Duchess of Kingston (Elizabeth Hervey) at St George's Church on Hanover Square, London (in a bigamous marriage). Evelyn died in 1773 without issue and his titles became extinct.
