[edit] Forming
Ben Kotch and his twin brother Mike had been looking to start a band and needed a singer and bassist. After Colleen Fitzpatrick met Michael while both were in school at New York University, she eventually became the group's singer; the band went through several bass players. The name "Eve's Plum" was derived from Eve Plumb, the actress most noted for portraying Jan Brady on The Brady Bunch.
[edit] Epic/550 Releases
Eve's Plum toured independently throughout 1991 and 1992. They signed to Sony Records in 1992, and in 1993 their debut album, Envy, was released and failed to appear on the Billboard 200. The first single, Blue, was promoted heavily and was shown on an episode of Beavis and Butthead. Though the single failed to chart, their label released a promotional video and single for Die Like Someone, but it also failed to make an impact. The album's third single became the only single of their career to chart. I Want It All spent one week on the Modern Rock Chart at #39. It was featured in The Next Karate Kid. The chart appearance led to the I Want It All ALIVE E.P. receiving a release, though limited, in 1994.
After promotion for the album ended, the band had some difficulty locating the right bass player, Theo Mack joined the group.
Another single, Eye, appeared on the soundtrack to Higher Learning along with songs by OutKast, Tori Amos, Liz Phair, and Rage Against the Machine, among others.
While developing their second album, the band recorded a cover version of If I Can't Have You which found its way onto a compilation album, Spirit Of 73 Rock for Choice.
By late 1995, the band's second album was ready for release. The first and only commercial single Jesus Loves You (Not As Much As I Do) failed to chart, thus causing the album to not chart as well. Over the next several months, promotion for the band was minimalized and several promotional singles were sent to radio: Wishing The Day Away, Cherry Alive and Fairy Princess. None of the singles brought any public interest to the band and Sony Records dropped the band in 1996.
There are a few songs which were performed live but didn't make it to a studio album, such as Ride With You (which was supposed to be in Cherry Alive) , Lost In Space (recorded for a compilation), Post Orgasmic Depression, Ice Cream, The Way You Look, So What and Twist It (a B-Side).
[edit] Break up and post-Plum
Not successful commercially, the band did not receive further support from their label and were subsequently dropped. They performed for some time thereafter, but this was the beginning of the end. They recorded "Save a Prayer" for a Duran Duran tribute album in 1998, but the band was not really viable.
Fitzpatrick has had moderate success with solo albums under the name Vitamin C. She made various guest appearances on television shows and movies. Her first solo album was certified platinum and had two hit singles. Her second album failed to have any hit singles and therefore failed to make an impact on the charts. Elektra Records then dropped her. She later signed to V2 Records in 2003 but after a failed single, she was dropped by them too. She was reportedly releasing two albums in fall 2007, but they never surfaced. It is unknown whether or not they will surface or if she even has a label. She also married guitarist Michael Kotch in 2004, who went on to play in the band Ruth Ruth. His twin brother Benjamin Kotch went on to drum for The World/Inferno Friendship Society from 1997 to 2007. Chris Giammalvo, who left the band in 1994 and was replaced by Theo Mack, joined Madder Rose in 1997 and played on their last two albums before they broke up in 1999. Theo Mack went on to become a sound man at a lot of backstage tours and started doing it full time. In 2005, a promo tape was sighted for sale on eBay. It contained demos from Envy and unreleased tracks such as Now You're Back. Another promo for Cherry Alive was also spotted on eBay.
