Redlinks aren't empty pipes
In Huntsville, Texas, you undid a redlink I created, with an edit comment "rm empty pipe". What do you mean by "empty pipe"? Thanks. -- JHunterJ 13:23, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
- It's a wiki-link to a nonexistent article. If you intend to create an article for the link, please do so first. Then you can link to it in other articles. --Evb-wiki 13:55, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
- That's called a redlink, not an empty pipe. Please see WP:RED; redlinks can be useful even when I myself do not intend to create the article. -- JHunterJ 14:07, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
- If the subject is important, why not create an article for it first. Otherwise, you're just assuming someone else will do the work. It's not like its real hard. I went ahead and created the article. I've also relinked it in Huntsville, Texas. --Evb-wiki 14:10, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks. FWIW, I didn't indicate that it was hard, just that it is not a requirement for a link, and there's no reason to remove redlinks to subjects that are notable enough for (eventual) articles. -- JHunterJ 14:36, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
- Yes, I understand. Notwithstanding, Wikipedia's "guidelines," I do not believe they are appropriate. They are very distracting, IMHO. --Evb-wiki 14:41, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
- Then please discuss on WT:RED rather than reverting edits that are within those guidelines (since they reflect the editorial consensus so far). No quotation marks are needed around guidelines, BTW. You can also set your preferences to render the redlinks differently, although probably still too distractingly for you. -- JHunterJ 15:02, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

As an editor whose intent is to improve articles, I'll make my edits freely. If there is a dispute, I will certainly follow consensus. This "dispute" was resolved simply by creating the missing article. Again, IMO, no harm, no foul. --Evb-wiki 15:17, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
- You don't think you need to follow the guidelines, then? -- JHunterJ 15:21, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
- From Wikipedia:Policies and guidelines (emphasis added):
- A guideline is any page that is: (1) actionable (i.e. it recommends, or recommends against, an action to be taken by editors) and (2) authorized by consensus. Guidelines are not set in stone and should be treated with common sense and the occasional exception.
- I temper any Draconian urges with a committment to do the work. --Evb-wiki 15:34, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
- Absolutely. Sorry to have carried this conversation on so long -- you've been perfectly civil, even as we continued to disagree, and I suppose I just found that too refreshing compared to my other recent User Talks (with other users). I'll let you get back to the work. But first:

DB tags
Hello, when nominating a page for speedy deletion please remember to notify the author, it is not a policy but it is considered civil and polite to, even if the page was created in bad faith, Thank for your co-oeration and happy editing! The Sunshine Man 14:49, 4 May 2007 (UTC)
Please do not removed speedy tags
Welcome to Wikipedia. Please do not remove speedy deletion tags from articles that you have created yourself, as you did with OptionsXpress. If you do not believe the article deserves to be deleted, then please place {{hangon}} on the page (please do not remove any existing speedy deletion tag) and make your case on the article's talk page. Administrators will look at your reasoning before deciding what to do with the article. Thank you. Dep. Garcia ( Talk + | Help Desk | Complaints ) 10:49, 5 May 2007 (UTC)
- I did not create OptionsXpress. If you check the article history here, you will see that I placed the original db tag. By the time I removed the tag here, the Co.'s notability had been established. The article has since been vandalized, and the notability-establishing refs. have been removed. I have now restored them. Perhaps you should pay more attention to what you are doing. --Evb-wiki 14:20, 5 May 2007 (UTC)
Duplicate images uploaded
Thanks for uploading Image:AlleyHouston.jpg. A machine-controlled robot account noticed that you also uploaded the same image under the name Image:219693213 b1950c6436 b.jpg. The copy called Image:219693213 b1950c6436 b.jpg has been marked for speedy deletion since it is redundant. If this sounds okay to you, there is no need for you to take any action.
This is an automated message- you have not upset or annoyed anyone. In the future, you may save yourself some confusion if you supply a meaningful file name and remember exactly which name you chose (file names are case sensitive, including the extension) so that you won't lose track of your uploads. Lady Paula Merry
Check this out - [2]. Do you think this "Lady Paula Merry" thing is legit? Postoak 22:52, 6 May 2007 (UTC)
- This link suggests the person is for real. She may be a self-promoting one-booker, or even a nut, and the article may be POV or an autobio, or maybe even spam (it's unsourced for sure), but it appears she's got a book published. See this. There's more about her than just being an author. Novelty? --Evb-wiki 23:05, 6 May 2007 (UTC)
- I can't find anything on her. You would think the claim "Lady Paul was an early pioneer in grassroots journalism and alternative media" would result in something in a Google search. Maybe the book isn't selling very well. I'm going to dinner. Postoak 23:18, 6 May 2007 (UTC)

I have the Alley on my watchlist, and I just wanted to pop by and say what nice work you are doing there! The pictures look grand. (I kept meaning to get some up there myself, but my camera is terrible.) Good work! :) --Cabiria 00:17, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

Motorcycle
Well spotted with the duplicate interwiki links. I reverted it. I do have one comment on your editing. You seem to overwikify the articles. One wikilink is all that is necessary to a topic from any page. While I did not go through the whole edit history of Motorcycle history, on which you have done lots of work, it is definitely overwikified. Many of the manufacturers are linked more than once and the years do not need it at all. Check this out. ww2censor 16:09, 16 May 2007 (UTC)
- True enough. I believe most often that's a result of making several lump additions over a period of time. I guess I do need to go back and cleanup after myself. Thanks. --Evb-wiki 16:16, 16 May 2007 (UTC)
- Of course, on the wikification of years, at least in an history article, they are useful because they add historical context, as a reader can see what was going on in the particular year. But I agree, once should be enough. --Evb-wiki 16:22, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

Recent Edits to Cynthia Ozick are not Vandalisms
The recent edits to Cynthia Ozick's page aren't quite vandalisms. I prefer to think of them as being entertaining decorations. All of this is a part of an absurdist internet project of mine encompassing the not so great minds of literature. If you wish to know more about this, please contact me as I am very willing to share the details.

Hi. I'm not admin, but when you have clear cases of disruptive socks, you can report them directly at WP:AIV. Especially here where the name is very similar. I usually do something like "Sockpuppet of User:Jsw48" with either a link to the puppet master or using {{user}}. Regards, Flyguy649talkcontribs 04:07, 22 May 2007 (UTC)

re: User:Mcneillg
Hi, please feel free to remove this if necessary Evb-wiki - but this was the only way I know how to contact you. One quick question, i've beenn getting involved in other pages Malcolm Ross (courtier) and the Master of the Household. Now that I've added references as requested by Wikipedia for ensuring the page is accurate and thus provides evidence for the comments, when will the boxes at the top requesting sources disappear? When an admin notices?
- Hello. This is the correct way to contact another editor. Yes, when an admin notices. Of course, the tag lists it among the other articles that have been challenged and this is one of the many tasks they do regularly. Please be patient. Since it has not been deleted already, chances are good that it meets Wikipedia standards. Understand that this is an important part of the process. Thanks. --Evb-wiki 14:20, 23 May 2007 (UTC) ps - Please remember to sign your name after your comments on talk pages.
-
- Re: the "need refs." tag on Malcolm Ross (courtier). It is appropriate to remove this tag when you have provided the refs. Tags like "refs. needed", "cleanup", "wikify", etc. do not require admin. assistence to be removed. Please note that a tag that has been removed before the requested work has been done will likely be replaced. You will find that many articles live with tags for a long time. Cheers. --Evb-wiki 14:36, 23 May 2007 (UTC)

Sylvia Plath
Dear Evb-wiki,
I broke down the Life section on the Sylvia Plath page because I wanted to expand it with more detail and I thought two sections will provide better organization than one more diluted section. I am pretty sure the references, as they are now, follow the wrong format style. I will try to clean up and help as much as I can. LaSaltarella 16:44, 1 June 2007 (UTC)
- That's great. I felt "early years" could not be seperated from "Life". Perhaps:

- College years
- Wife, mother and poet

- Biography
- or something similar might work. Cheers. --Evb-wiki 17:01, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

References tag
I see you reverted my revert of my edit to the references tag. I have now read up on this and basically all I see is that {{reflist}} just produces a smaller font size that the regular ref tag. You might want to read this part of a discussion on the matter, or even the whole page though some of the links to other discussions on the same thing no longer work. I am not sure that {{:reflist is newer, better, or preferred. It seems to be matter of individual choice. Cheers ww2censor 01:54, 15 June 2007 (UTC)
- Yeah. I believe it is a matter of personal choice. I thought you were searching . . . so, I provided the one I've seen used more often lately. I'm not sure of the difference between {{reflist}} and {{reflist|2}} (this apparently doesn't make 2 columns) but they both get the same result as, and (if anything) are more efficient than, <small><references/></small>. I didn't mean to suggest you did something wrong. I just thought I was providing what you were looking for. --Evb-wiki 02:08, 15 June 2007 (UTC)

I am sorry for my erroneous comment on this article's talk page...I had a 'senior moment' and thought I was talking about a different article and a different editor! Jack1956 19:42, 19 June 2007 (UTC)
non-theism entry
Dear Evb-wiki,
Thanks for your editing of non-theism, aiming for concision. "God," for many, has specific connotations (which often relate to one "supreme being"), and which doesn't necessarily include the divine (or "devine," as you spelled it), meaning supernatural (i.e. non-material, in the sense I mean). I wonder if we might possibly please include the word divine in the "nontheism" entry, to encompass a wider sphere of meaning?
Thanks, Aphilo
- Can you provide an example of what you mean by divine? I don't understand the difference you are suggesting. --Evb-wiki 23:52, 18 June 2007 (UTC)
For example, the Greeks and Romans each considered their pantheon of Gods and Goddesses divine, yet Pan, or Venus/Aphrodite, were not supreme, and Pan wasn't a God or God, yet was divine. Similarly, in Hinduism, there are many! expressions of the divine, yet they are not Gods. -Aphilo

Just so you know, there are a few more articles on putative participants now. Should I bundle them together, or would you like to since you've done the bundling so far? BigHaz - Schreit mich an 22:11, 21 June 2007 (UTC)

P.I.T.
Hi, I noticed that you put the (db-band) tag on the above article, I have slightly improved the article although I have no knowledge whatsoever of the topic. I improved it to give the creator of the article a chance to improve it further and add sources etc and it could maybe become a reasonable article.
Thanks

- The article makes no claim of notability and provides no reliable soiurce. It still qualifies for {{db-band}}. I placed a request for references tag on it. If it's not improved promptly, I'll send it to AfD. --Evb-wiki 19:51, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

Edward Guinan
Artifax, Edward Guinan, the guy who discovered the ring systems of Neptune is notable. The discovery is attributed to him in Google Scholar and elsewhere. . Even if for some reason you didn't think such a discovery notable, the directions for A7 say not to place it where there is even an assertion of notability. Please pay attention to what you are doing when you place a speedy delete tag--that claim was at the end of the article, not the beginning, and it was referenced. I declined to delete it , of course, so no harm done. (The picture, though, was copyvio, and you appropriately deleted it.) DGG 15:46, 28 June 2007 (UTC)
others
- I was trying to see why this happened, so I checked some other edits & most of them seem altogether right--very good vandal fighting. So I noticed that you marked Fred Rompelberg for deletion last week, as "db-hoax" saying you did not believe the speed record. But it's confirmed on the first page of Google hits by the TY Times, & more important: Hoaxes may not be speedied, they have to be nominated for prod, or afd, in order to avoid this kind of error. Early one, I once or twice said things were hoaxes without sufficient checking, and been greatly embarrassed at what people said. No one of us knows about everything.
This is what i think was the reason: You do very well fixing things, so perhaps I can take the liberty of some personal advice: don't try to go too fast or do too many of the same thing in a row. One extremely experienced admin had to admit on a policy page last week, that after deleting a few dozen nonsense bios in a row, he sometimes stopped looking at them carefully, and deleted some clearly inadequate bios, but they happened to be about important people. He was using a bot. I don't--it's easy to go too fast.
- Also, about edit summaries: please be aware that edit summaries cannot be removed , unlike comments on talk pages, so you've got to be extra prudent, so: "(if you don't know the diff btw "no one" and "know one," don't edit)" - It's not a good idea to criticize an editor in these terms no matter what the error is, or ever make fun of one. Everyone makes typos, And this one was probably a specific sort of psychological error--the brain automatically uses the shortest word, or the word that was used just before--not a grammar error and you will see this particular know/no slip a good deal. Just fix it.
Happy editing, DGG 17:25, 28 June 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for the advice. I must have forgotten to take my meds that day. :-) Cheers. --Evb-wiki 18:26, 28 June 2007 (UTC)
Hello -
Haven't heard from you in awhile, how's it going? Postoak 04:11, 2 July 2007 (UTC)
- Hey. Been a little busier lately. And piddling with some housekeeping stuff. My watchlist had also gotten a bit unruly. What's up with you? Any interesting new articles? --Evb-wiki 04:26, 2 July 2007 (UTC)
- Nothing new really. I have my eyes on Johnson Space Center as the next article for GA candidate. It needs some work when compared to Kennedy Space Center. I think it's an important article, since we are Space City...or was it Screwston? Postoak 04:36, 2 July 2007 (UTC)
- Yeah, JSC is an important article. It needs quite of bit of work, but I do believe it could be a good one. Of course, we could always do Cough syrup in Houston. --Evb-wiki 04:48, 2 July 2007 (UTC)
- Yes, what a dilemma. Cough syrup in Houston is incredibly important...according to the leaflet I read downtown being distributed by Lady Paula Merry. I think I'll go with JSC for now :) Postoak 04:57, 2 July 2007 (UTC)
- Check out Talk:Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center, just some prelim notes and a sandbox if your interested. Need to get to bed, have an 8am meeting. G'night, Postoak 05:53, 2 July 2007 (UTC)

Licenses
Hello, reading on your user page that you're a lawyer (and thus shoud be used to legalese like these cc licenses), I am frankly a bit surprised that you alter the licenses found on flickR (e.g. cc-by-sa-nc-nd-2.0 to cc-by-sa-2.5) when uploading to Wikipedia. This concerns Image:Capitan_Theater.jpg, Image:Cellist@LyricCentre.jpg, Image:Hobby Center Houston.jpg and possibly others (I didn't check more). I tagged those with the correct licenses, but that means they have to be deleted right away, since Wikipedia does (with good reasons) not allow works with "non-commercial" restrictions. Did I miss anything? Did you get (written) permission to re-license these pictures? If so, please do add this crucial information to the description pages. It'd be sad to see so many nice pictures of theaters deleted (also my greatest hobby – pun intended, since the "other" image in Hobby Center is by me...) --AndreasPraefcke 18:12, 3 July 2007 (UTC)
- Hi. I was not aware when I uploaded these images that Wikipedia did no allow "non-commercial" licensed images. I thought Wikipedia was a non-commercial site. As I noted the flickr licenses were cc-by-nc-sa, if I tagged them with the wrong tag (as it appears I did), it was completely unintentional and my mistake. I'm afraid I have no way to salvage them at present. --Evb-wiki 18:25, 3 July 2007 (UTC)

- Too bad. :-( The pictures are lovely. But Wikipedia, being uncommercial itself, has the goal to provide free content for anyone to reuse in any way, including commercial use (e. g. if someone wants to print the encyclopedia or parts of it and sell it, or use it in a textbook). --AndreasPraefcke 18:49, 3 July 2007 (UTC)
Commercial use of Images
[Please note that I have removed multiple warnings/notices concerning the use of non-commercial image licenses received as a result of uploading images from flickr.com that were not properly licensed for use on Wikipedia. See this page's history to view those warnings/notices.] --Evb-wiki 13:40, 4 July 2007 (UTC)
Flickr
Please do not upload "non-commercial" or "no-derivitive" licensed images from flickr. We can not accept them anywhere. Also, you should upload free images from flickr to Commons to help protect the free license of the image and make the image available and same someone the work of having to move it over later anyways. Thank you for understanding. MECU≈talk 12:46, 4 July 2007 (UTC)
David Greco
It is interesting that you were the first to jump on the deletionist path for this Delete David Greco and the person who started it has vanished; clearly they signed up with that in mind. It seems rather disappointing that all that was started by someone who didn't care to be a user at all and rather wanted the Greco page deleted. Thanks for getting on that bandwagon. Ultimately, though, the irony in all of this is genius. Thanks again. 24.202.85.2 02:42, 5 July 2007 (UTC)
Teresa Lipowska
Hello, while patrolling recent changes, I saw you slapped a speedy-tag on Teresa Lipowska about one second after it was created by a new user. Very often, new users will save the page as they are editing, instead of using the preview button. I think we shall give the creator a little bit of time to expand the article on this Polish actress, and see when he or she is done wether the article varrants a speedy deletion or not. Dr bab 12:53, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks. As I often do, once the author showed an attempt to correct/expand the article to meet Wikipedia standards, I provided assistance by correcting some formatting and added an external link source. Or didn't you notice? Very few new-article patrolers do this. And, the tag was removed as appropriate. I've assisted some new editors with creating pretty good articles from crap through this process. It seems to work pretty well. --Evb-wiki 14:09, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
- Good man. Perhaps it is not only you who should be less eager to speedy-tag, perhaps I should also be less eager to shout at editors for being so eager. Anyways, well done on that article, your methods seems sound. Dr bab 22:22, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
Apologies
I was merely making sure all comments and votes are marked so on afds. I'm aware of talk page refactoring and I do avoid ti. Once again, sorry. -WarthogDemon 16:25, 23 July 2007 (UTC)
- No hard feelings. I just thought that the double indent, coupled with the lack of a !vote, made it clear that my comment was made in response to the foregoing query. Peace. --Evb-wiki 17:18, 23 July 2007 (UTC)
Sean Diaz tagged for speedy deletion
- Yes, I have been involved in placing speedy delete tags. They have been removed by the author about a half dozen times. --Evb-wiki 16:12, 24 July 2007 (UTC)
AfD attention request
Not sure if this is out of order, but there's a somewhat contentions AfD (here) that has received little outside attention. Since the AfD was initiated, a number of single purpose accounts (likely sockpuppets) have started editing (and discussing on the talk page) the article; not !voting, fortunately. In any case, I wanted to see if some AfD regulars could stop by and weigh in. I'm not looking to sway !votes here—I haven't targeted deletionists; I'm asking editors that seem to !vote a lot on music-related AfDs. No reply is necessary but your opinion is valued. I have removed the {{db-nonsense}} tag from this user page, because I feel there should be some leniency in what we require users to keep on their pages. If he wants to display a personal eccentricity by having a silly user page, I don't think it harms the project. If you have an additional reasoning, I am open to further discussion on the issue. Regarding the speedy deletion of Eeenix
Hi, Evb-wiki, I noticed you tagged Eeenix for speedy deletion; I agree that this is an acceptable measure, and agree that the page in question is an example of copyright infringement. It undoubtedly is--the text has just been ripped off the project's site--but moreover, the article is completely non-notable. Have you gone to AfD yet? Ragaxus 15:04, 29 July 2007 (UTC)
- No. i believe it's speediable as a copyvio and as spam. I would only take it to a 5-day Afd if it was simply nn. As a copyvio, it needs to be deleted as fast as possible and needs no discussion. --Evb-wiki 15:08, 29 July 2007 (UTC)
- I understand; thanks for your quick clarification. Ragaxus 15:10, 29 July 2007 (UTC)
