Talk:Evaluating sums

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I don't like this page at all, but I don't know where else to put it. It's all proofs, of course; the identities are all mentioned elsewhere. I know there is a debate over the place of proofs in Wikipedia, so I don't want to merge this article piecewise with the articles whose identities it proves. On the other hand, if it's to be its own article, why stop here? There are hundreds of other sums I could be writing about. It's very arbitrary. On the other hand, the sums it mentions are particularly widely used. Ryan Reich 23:51, 12 February 2006 (UTC)

Please forgive my ignorance of post-basic calculus, but what process involves substituting a non-variable with a non-variable such as replacing 2 with zero as suggested below? (To be absolutely precise, if one is working in a setting where 2 = 0, this formula is nonsensical; however, in that case the sum can easily be evaluated by inspection since the terms alternate between 0 and 1). I also don't see a reason for making the comment about if 2 = 0 -- it doesn't appear to add anything to the article. PirateAngel 10:43, 15 November 2007 (UTC)
