Evan Roberts (radio personality)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Evan Roberts (born July 11, 1983) is an American sports radio personality. He currently hosts the midday (10am-1pm) show with Joe Benigno on WFAN.

"Screech" Roberts grew up in Cedarhurst, New York and graduated from Lawrence High School in 2001.

Roberts' career began at the age of 10 when he had an opportunity to do updates for WFAN's Imus in the Morning radio program. He then hosted his own radio show called Kidsports on WGBB and expanded it to a wider kids audience with a show called Going Bzircus; a few years later, he hosted "What's Up With Evan Roberts" for the now-defunct Radio AAHS (later AAHS World Radio) children's radio network. After graduating from high school he worked for XM Satellite Radio in Washington, D.C. for 2 years. In 2003 and 2004, he worked for WJFK in Baltimore, Maryland and then moved back to New York to host his own show on Sirius Satellite Radio.

Despite lack of education and on-air ability, Mr. Roberts received coveted mid-day cohost position due to the influence of family friend and WFAN station manager Mark Chernoff.

According to the WFAN website [1], Roberts is a diehard New York Mets, New Jersey Nets and New York Jets fan, who enjoys pro wrestling and reruns of Beverly Hills, 90210.

Screech lives in Long Island City, NY with his cat Freedom.

In a show of ultimate fandom, after his mid-day shift on September 19th, Evan and his father drove down to Washington in order to spark the slumping Mets.

[edit] Reviews

March 2,2008 - From Phil Mushnick of New York Post:

"While sports talk radio hosts are encouraged to speak "guy talk," WFAN's Evan Roberts, last week, spoke of those times "When I'm groovin' with a lady." Hmmm. That's the kind of guy talk spoken by guys who spend Saturday nights groovin' with a bag of Doritos."

- August 14, 2007 - Neil Best from Newsday wrote: A friend suggested Friday that I check out the archived interview of Joe Torre by Evan Roberts on WFAN. It was eye-opening for anyone familiar with the usual afternoon "interviews" on the station. Roberts ask questions, then waited for Torre to give complete, uninterrupted answers. Result: an enlightening exchange of information...

August 13, 2007 edition of New York Post by Phil Mushnick - Joe Torre, on WFAN with Evan Roberts Friday......Roberts, incidentally, facilitated a strong session with Torre because he asked direct and mostly good questions instead of trying to dazzle him and FAN'S audience with statements that Torre would then endorse.

In the May 15, 2007 edition of Newsday, beat writer Neil Best wrote in an article entitled "Midday Radio Nothing to Talk about" that Roberts hasn't had much of an effect on WFAN Arbitron ratings.

"Alas, Roberts has turned out to be too safe," Best wrote. "[Roberts is] just another fan on the FAN who is long on knowledge and passion but short on the personality/shtick that helps make sports talk bearable."
