[edit] Origin and recording

The song pairs lyrics written by lead singer Eddie Vedder with music written by drummer Matt Cameron. This was Matt Cameron's first writing contribution for the band.

Matt Cameron on the song:

They were really adamant about me bringing in songs for Binaural. I brought four or five, and Ed really liked the one that became "Evacuation", wanted to write lyrics for it. He switched the arrangement around a little bit; the verse and the chorus. Had a real clear idea of what he wanted the song to be.[1]

[edit] Lyrical meaning

Eddie Vedder about "Evacuation":

Matt wrote it, and there's a lot of momentum in it. I couldn't sit down and write to it, so that was when I'd take it in the car and just go for drives — the open road thing. So it felt like I was evacuating. The theory behind the song, which I've probably done four times already, is getting out of a situation. "Rearviewmirror" might be the same song. But it's time to make a change — it's a song about change.[2]

[edit] Live performances

The song was premiered live at the band's May 10, 2000 concert in Bellingham, Washington.[3] The song was played on the band's 2000 and 2003 tours, but has not been performed on any tour since.[3] A performance of "Evacuation" can be found on the DVD Touring Band 2000.
