European route E40 is the longest European route, more than 8000 km long, connecting Calais in France via Belgium, Germany, Poland, Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and Kyrgyzstan, with Ridder in Kazakhstan near the border to China.

The road makes a big detour in Central Asia. The shortest road between Calais and Ridder is about 2000 km shorter, mostly using the E30 via Berlin-Moscow-Omsk.

  • Within France the E40 follows the autoroute A16 along 30 km
  • Within Belgium the E40 follows the A18, the A10 and the A3
  • Within Germany the E40 follows the Bundesautobahn 44, BAB 4, BAB 45, BAB 5, and again the BAB 4.
  • Within Poland the E40 follows the A4 highway and the DK 4 National Road.
  • Within Ukraine the E40 follows the M11, M06, M03, M04 roads.
  • Within Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan, the E40 follows the local route M39.
