European Masters in Interactive Multimedia

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

European Master in Interactive Multimedia (EMIM) is a partnership between five institutions of higher learning in Europe: Babes-Bolyai in Romania, ITIN in France, Staffordshire University in United Kingdom, Tallinn University in Estonia and Yeditepe University in Turkey. This partnership gives students across the Europe a chance to study in university level partly via distance learning and to be able to enhance professional practice through deepening, broadening and consolidating the knowledge with the broader European community.

EMIM is kind of a team taught course of post-graduate study endorsed by the European Academy of Digital Media (EADiM). The course is offered to both part-time and full-time students. The students will enroll and remain as students at their home institution, but virtually study with all partner institutions. The students are offered 12 modules of 5 ECTS points each to study via distance learning. These modules are specifically designed for online studying, and they involve students to discussions, group works and give the freedom of studying when ever it's possible for the student. The partner universities take care of the enrolling, administering and conferring the final degree to its own students. The degree conferred will indicate that the student has studied with the mentioned European institutions of higher learning.

[edit] History

The idea of a two-year course was born in the European Academy of Digital Media (EADiM), a network of European multimedia experts working in enterprises and educational institutes. There was found the need to set up a course which would be possible to study by distance learning's means and would be offered mainly for students already working in multimedia companies but also to others. The greatest advantage was seen to be that the collaborating universities would be sharing independent curricular modules. It was decided that the modules would be given by home lecturers and virtual guest lecturers over Virtual Academic Learning Network (Valnet), a virtual network under the auspices of the EADiM. With the move of the economy toward an emphasis on a digital environment there is a continuing need for professionals in this field.

EMIM was to be started first at year 2006 with Staffordshire University (GB), ITIN-ESCIA (FR), and University of Milan Bicocca (IT). Due to delay in the approval process at University of Milan Bicocca, the steering committee of EMIM decided to postpone the beginning of the program for one year. After being reviewed by the Senate of the University, it was approved to start in the 2006-2007 academic year. One of the academics behind EMIM is dr. Rodica Mocan, lecturer at Babes-Bolyai University from Cluj, Romania. The program proposal was first submitted for approval to the Senate of Babes-Bolyai University in 2006, under the title of “Masterat European In Multimedia Interactiva”, as a masters program of the Media Department, from the Faculty of Theatre and Television. Over the past years also Melissa Lee Price from Staffordshire University has promoted this course through a virtual network. EMIM has now started, trialling modules, preparing a full launch in 2008 with Babes-Bolyai, ITIN, Staffordshire University, Tallinn University and Yeditepe University.
