European Climate Forum

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The European Climate Forum (ECF) is a platform for joint studies and science-based stakeholder dialogues on climatic change. ECF brings together representatives of different parties concerned with the climate problem. The core activity of the Forum is to define and carry out joint studies; these provide arguments for long-term climate mitigation and adaptation policies leading ultimately towards a sustainable development path.

The European Climate Forum has been founded in September 2001 by Prof. Carlo Jaeger and Prof. Klaus Hasselmann. The Board of Directors consist of a minimum of four and a maximum of seven members, including the Chairman, the Vice Chairman, the Treasurer and the Secretary. Currently the Board of Directors is composed by:

  • Carlo C. Jaeger (Chairman, Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research PIK)
  • Klaus Hasselmann (Vice-Chairman, Max Planck Institute for Meteorology)
  • Carlo Carraro (Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei (FEEM))
  • Stephan Singer (World Wide Fund for Nature)

The Council consists of fourteen members maximum of whom seven are to be scientists. The members are usually elected for a period of three years. Currently the Members of the Council are:

  • Ola M. Johannessen (Chairman - Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Centre, Bergen)
  • Martin Welp (Vice-Chairman Fachhochschule Eberswalde)
  • Jürgen Engelhard (RWE Rheinbraun)
  • Bill Hare (Greenpeace International)
  • Jean-Charles Hourcade (Centre International des Recherches Scietific d`Environment et du Development)
  • Nick Otter (Alstom Power)
  • Alexander Wokaun (Paul Scherrer Institut, ETH Zürich)

[edit] Climate Games

ECF and Munich Re have launched a climate game: Winds of Change, which is a board game for 2-4 persons. The game illustrates the climate challenge in a playful way and it can be used in team learning, schools, focus groups, etc. It includes several features, which are hotly debated in climate policy-making. These include among others: investments in R&D, technological learning and innovation, de-carbonizing the economy, ocean uptake of CO2, the 2 degrees limit, and insurance against extreme weather events.
