Euroleon nostras (Fourcroy, 1785) |
Euroleon nostras is an antlion found over most of Europe [1]. Adults may reach up to 30 mm long, with a wingspan of 70 mm [2]. Larvae require dry sandy soil, close to vertical sandy ledges that help adults emerge. The adults need tall, isolated Scots pine trees nearby, where mating takes place [2].
[edit] United Kingdom
E. nostras is an extremely rare insect in Britain [3], only known from the Minsmere area of the Suffolk coast, although a population of this or a related species has very recently been found near Wells-next-the-Sea, Norfolk. To date, adult insects have not been found in Norfolk, only first and final instar larvae and an un-hatched cocoons. Because of this, the record is not yet confirmed as E. nostras, as other species are closely similar.
