[edit] Greenlanders in the EU
Hello Eujin 16, thanks for your message.
The question is puzzling and, for that reason, I think that the issue of EU citizenship of Greenlanders should not be mentioned before more research is done on the topic. Both Greenland government [1] and EU sources [2] [3] states that Greenland, although being part of the "Danish Realm" (Rigsfællesskabet), is not part of the European Community and of the European Union. Greenland is defined as "one of the overseas countries and territories associated with the European Community".
On the other hand, article 17 (1) of the current "consolidated" version of the Treaty of Rome states [4] that a citizen of the Union is someone who holds "the nationality of a Member State". My understanding is that, if Greenland is not a member of the EU, then the article 17 (1) might not be applicable to its citizens. However, Greenland is not a sovereign country, so one may need how the Greenland Home Rule Act [5] exactly states about citizenship. Do you know if Greenlanders vote for the European Parliament election? That could be a significant test to prove or discharge their status of EU citizens.
All in all, I think it's preferrable to avoid in-text references before the issue is properly researched.
Thanks again for your contribution. Best regards, FrancescoMazzucotelli (talk) 04:33, 16 December 2007 (UTC)
