Hollow-bearing Eucalyptus camaldulensis (River Red Gum) in the Barmah Forest.

Most of the trees surrounding it (all red gums) are too young to have hollows suitable for vertebrates. They are the result of a deliberate logging practices, which either cleared or ringbarked most larger River Red Gums in the region in order to grow a dense stand of uniform trees. This has lead to many species in the area being threatened with local or even global extinction due to the scarcity of remaining old hollow-bearing trees.

The area has also been stressed by lack of flooding from the nearby Murray river, and grazing by cattle which prevent an understory from developing.
