Estudio Caballito Malo
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Estudio Caballito Malo is an art and design collective founded in 2003 by Scottish artist Bad Horsey. Members generally remain anonymous, both in the commercial arena and the group shows, favouring pseudonyms to conceal their identities. The latter take place with generally very little notice and are notorious for their locations; whereas 2004's Four At Forty Four took place in a gallery opposite the British Museum, the subsequent Paris 1919 was hung in a fire station in North London.
The name was taken in direct homage to Javier Mariscal's Estudio Mariscal but operates on an advancement basis patterned on a Karate Dojo. Artists or designers are hand-selected for inclusion and are awarded coloured belts depending on their achievements at grading ceremonies. Artists are also encouraged to wear a gi whilst they work. The exact order of the belts and the criteria for advancement remain a closely guarded secret, typical of many aspects of Bad Horsey's way of working, as does the location of the studio itself.
