[edit] History and Tourism

These special weather conditions have created over the centuries a unique ecosystem and biodiversity which have made it possible for this area to be declared an Area of National Natural Interest.

From 1962 until 1977, the United States Coast Guard operated a Long Range Aid to Navigation (LORAN) transmitting station on Estaca de Bares (also known as Vares). After the Coast Guard ended its operations, the site was transferred to the United States Air Force, which operated a communications station until 1991. The site has remained abandoned since 1991 and is currently under the control of the Spanish Ministry of Defense.
