The Esplanade Bridge is a 260 metres long road bridge that spans across the mouth of the Singapore River in Singapore with the Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay on its northern abutment and the Merlion on the southern. The low level concrete arched bridge have seven spans and supports two four-lane carriageways and wide walkways along both side, being 70 metres wide.
The Esplanade Bridge was built to provide faster vehicular access between Marina Centre and the financial district of Shenton Way. Construction of the bridge began in early 1994 and was completed in March 1997. The main contractor was Obayashi Corporation.
It is located near Esplanade Drive; near Esplanade Foot Path; 0.1 kilometre away from Fullerton Road; 0.1 kilometre away from Boat Quay; Esplanade Bridge is geographically located at latitude (1.288 degrees) 1° 17' 16" North of the Equator and longitude (103.854 degrees) 103° 51' 14" East of the Prime Meridian on the Map of Singapore.
The relocation of the Merlion in 23 April 2002 and was completed the unprecedented feat on April 25. This carefully engineered journey involved one barge, two DEMAG AC1600S cranes of 500 tonne lifting capacity and a team of 20 engineers and workers on site. The entire process took the 8.6 metre tall Merlion from its current site at Merlion Park by the Esplanade Bridge, to its new home 120 metres away on a newly reclaimed promontory in front of The Fullerton Hotel.
Several sporting events held at the Marina Bay involved the bridge as part of their routes.
