[edit] The esophagus

Is the oesophagus/esophagus a tissue, or an organ, or both?

Talk pages are for discussing the subject, not to be used as a forum. Read carefully, the answer is in the article.--Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 13:25, 9 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Striated

Hi someone change the upper third redirecting to 'sstriated muscle' Reword it to be skeletal and put the link to skeletal muscle. It redirects to a page combining skeletal and cardiac. If you had cardiac muscle around your esophagus you would be dead meat.

[edit] Muscular hypertrophy?

Have there been any studies related to swallowing more difficult things (like larger chunks of food) and the esophagus having to widen or relax to let them through? I am wondering, when people swallow without gravity's aid (lying down) or especially, when resisting gravity (upside down) if there would be increased esophagial activity, and if the strength of it might increase, and if this hypertrophy might cause potential problems if it did occur.
