Escats are a jazz and pop Costa Rican band composed of three members:

  • Luis Alonso Naranjo: Pianist, principal vocalist, composer, and producer
  • Kin Rivera Jr: Drummer, co-producer
  • Nelson Segura: Bass guitarist, secondary vocalist

Their name comes from the term scat singing, a form of vocal improvisation in jazz music employing nonsense syllables.[1]

They are characterised by their facility in interpreting various musical genres, including jazz, pop, rock, Latin music, Afro-Cuban music, and their fusions. Together, they have worked on albums with many artists, including Arnoldo Castillo, Tatiana Gomez, Marta Fonseca, Allan Guzman, Tito Oses, Jazz Garbo, Fusion Caribe, Juan Carlos Urena, Robert Aguilar, Sasha Campbell, Squad, The Neotics, Porpartes, Geovanny Escalante, Maf, Fabricio Alvarado, Adrian Goizueta, Enoch Samuels, Ares, Humberto Vargas, Enrique Castillo, among others. Kin Rivera Jr was nominated to 2007 Latin Grammy with the album "Solo Paz", and is a SABIAN cymbals and YAMAHA drums endorsee. Nelson is a Magma strings endorsee. Luis Alonso is also the principal singer for the international project TEAM VIP, where he works with musicians such as Arturo Sandoval, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Ed Calle, Geovanny Hidalgo, Lee Levin, Richie Flores, Roberto Roena, among others, Kin Rivera Jr also appear in this project. They opened for Sin Bandera, Kudai, Chayanne, Cristian Castro´s concerts in Costa Rica, and have also played with Venezuelan singer-songwriter Ilan Chester.[citation needed]

Escats was signed by Sony BMG in September of 2007 and now in January 24th their first album "Para quien quiera que seas, donde quiera que estes" receive a Gold disc award, from Sony BMG for more than 5,000 CDs sellings in Costa Rica.
