Escambia Bay Bridge
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Escambia Bay Bridge is a six-lane freeway bridge that crosses the Escambia Bay near Pensacola, Florida. The bridge is part of Interstate 10 and was damaged during Hurricane Ivan in 2004.[1] The storm heavily damaged the bridge. It knocked 58 spans off the eastbound and westbound bridges and misaligned another 66 spans causing the bridge to close to traffic in both directions.[2] Construction on a new bridge to replace the one damaged by Hurrican Ivan began in early 2006. Unlike the previous bridge, this one adds one lane in both directions, making a total of six lanes (three eastbound and three westbound). The westbound portion of the bridge opened on December 12, 2007.[3]
This essential bridge connects the northern part of Florida with the Gulf Coast and is used by an estimated 25,000 vehicles a day.
