- Silvestre Vélez de Escalante, a Spanish Padre who in 1776 took an expedition through the Rocky Mountains, the eastern Great Basin, and the Colorado Plateau.[1] As an early western explorer in southern Utah, there is a town, river, and national monument named after him.
