From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ernest Stapleton (January 15, 1869 — December 14, 1938) was an English cricketer. He was a right-handed batsman who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire. He was born in New Basford and died in Nottingham.
Stapleton made his first cricketing appearance for the Nottinghamshire Colts against the Yorkshire Colts in 1896. However, it was a further six years until his next cricketing appearance, in his first and only first-class match, for Derbyshire against Marylebone Cricket Club. Stapleton, as an opening batsman, made just one run in the first innings and just two runs in the second.
Though Stapleton made an appearance in the Minor Counties Championship for Glamorgan in 1909, he made no further first-class appearances.
Ernest's brothers-in-law, John and George Gunn played Test cricket for England, while Ernest's nephew, also named George Gunn played for Nottinghamshire for 22 years.
