Ernest Smith (1869)

Ernest Smith was a first class cricketer who played 21 games for Oxford University from 1888 to 1891, 154 for Yorkshire County Cricket Club from 1888 to 1907 and 4 for Marylebone Cricket Club from 1892 to 1902. He also appeared for Oxford and Cambridge Universities Past and Present (1890), 15 matches for the Gentlemen (1891-1906), North of England (1891-1908), Gentlemen of England (1891-1910), CI Thornton's XI (1892-1899). He also played first class cricket for Over 30 (1901), Lancashire and Yorkshire (1903), Rest of England (1904), in 27 games for HDG Leveson-Gower's XI (1909-1928) and for Harlequins (1924).

In 242 first class matches in all, he scored 7,686 runs at 21.46 with a highest score of 164* for HDG Leveson-Gower's XI against Cambridge University. He scored 6 centuries in all and took 174 catches. A right arm fast bowler, he took 454 wickets at 25.69 with a best of 7 for 40 against M.C.C. He took 5 wickets in an innings 22 times and 10 wickets in a match on 3 occasions.

He was born on October 19, 1869 in Morley, Yorkshire and died on April 9, 1945 in Eastbourne, Sussex. His brother A.E. Smith played one first class game for 'English Residents' in 1890.
