Ern Baxter
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
William John Ernest (Ern) Baxter (1914 - 1993) was a self-taught Pentecostal theologian born in Saskatoon Canada to God-fearing parents. He began ministering at the age of 17 and continued until his death which occurred in San Diego, California at the age of 79 [1]
From 1947 to 1954 he traveled with noted evangelist William Branham, and preached to hundreds of thousands of people on occasion [2]. Baxter said he separated from the evangelist because of doctrinal differences [3].
Baxter is possibly best known for being part of what was called the Shepherding Movement, an influential and controversial expression of the charismatic renewal in the 1970s and 1980s. Its emphasis on submission to a personal pastor, or "shepherd" as the movement termed it, brought accusations of authoritarianism. [4]
