Erik Mykland (born July 21, 1971 in Risør), nicknamed Myggen (the Mosquito), is a Norwegian former footballer. During his career Mykland played for Risør, Bryne, Start, Utrecht (loan), Linz, Panathinaikos FC, 1860 München and FC København.
Mykland, a rarity in modern Norway footballers (he stood at a mere 171 cm and was a very technical player), amassed 78 caps and 2 goals on the Norwegian national team. He played the World Cup in 1994 and 1998 and the European Championship in 2000. He used to flap his arms and hands like a mosquito when he celebrated his goals.
Was in 1989 "brought home" to Start from Bryne for 60.000 kroner and had his debut later that year against Moss on Melløs stadium, in a season ending in 9th place. In 1990 he was named midfielder of the year in Norway. Won the bronze medal with Start in 1991 with surprising victories against Viking(4-1) and Rosenborg(5-0). After the match against Rosenborg, Myggen and 7! other Start players were named in the team of the week. Also this year, Mykland was named the best player when Norway's youth team beat Italy 6-0 in Stavanger. 1992: Another bronze medal with Start and named player of the year.. 1993: Named Midfielder of the year. 1996: Relegation with Start, left for Lask/Linz in Austria before ended season. In 1996 Movie producer Thomas Robsahm made a film of Mykland simply called "Myggen", following Mykland a whole season.
Mykland was one of the most popular footballers in Norway, well-liked but never without controversy. During the 1998 World Cup, in-between games he and Henning Berg were caught in a bar drinking. They claimed they had only had a few beers, but Berg later admitted in his biography that they actually were drunk. There was also an incident during his time in FC København where he was found drunk on the pavement asking people walking by to arm wrestle. He was also criticized for his occasional smoking. Håvard Rem wrote a book about Mykland in 2000, entitled Erik Mykland : oppvekst, livsstil, EM 2000, spillestil.
8.sept 2006 Mykland and several other former Norwegian national team players played a showball match against old Argentina stars like Maradona, Caniggia, Almeyda and many more. Argentina won 10-8. In June 2007, he arranged a football school in his hometown of Risør alongside with former Start player Bernt Chr. Birkeland.
