Eric Johnston (NT Administrator)

Commodore Eric Eugene Johnston AO, OBE (Born in Shanghai, China, 29 July 1933; Died in Darwin, 26 February, 1997) was Administrator of the Northern Territory from 1 January 1981 to 1 July 1989. Earlier he was a serving officer in the Royal Australian Navy and commanded HMAS Perth in action during the Vietnam War. After Cyclone Tracy, as Naval Officer Commanding Northern Australia, he was involved in the administration of emergency naval assistance.[1] [2] He was awarded the Military OBE in 1970[3] and the Order of Australia.
The Eric Johnston Lectures of the Northern Territory Library were named in his honour. He gave the first Lecture in 1986.[4]
