Ergene Khatun

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ergene Khatun (also spelled Orqina or Orghana) became the head of the ulus of the Chagatai Khanate upon the death of her husband Qara Hülëgü in 1252. Until 1261 she ruled as regent for her son Mubarak Shah. In 1262, Alghu invaded the Chagatai Khanate, and Ergene became involved in the conflict between Arigh Böke and Khubilai. Sent to Samarkand by Arigh Böke to make peace with Alghu, she married him instead. After Alghu's death in 1265 or 1266, she managed to place her and Qara Hülegü's son Mubarak Shah on the throne, but only for some months - he was disposed by Baraq in 1266.[1]
