I believe that this page should be titled "Erastus Corning II" rather than "Erastus Corning 2nd." According to Wikipedia Naming Conventions, ordinals in names should be expressed as Roman Numerals. [[1]] --Albany NY 04:48, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

Normally I'd agree. But if you look at the recent history of the page, you'll find the following edit summary:

moved Erastus Corning II to Erastus Corning 2nd: Mayor Corning did not use the roman numeral "II" after his name, opting instead for "2nd". (Per Paul Grondahl's biography, "Mayor Corning")

[edit] Mayoral tenure

There seems to be conflicing information on how many years Corning was mayor. The Albany County biography says he was elected in 1941. Since inaugurations are held on January 1 after the election, this would indicate that he took office in 1942 and was hence mayor for 41 years. This is cooborated by the Political Graveyard, which says he was mayor from 1942-1983. However, the list of mayors says that his term started in 1941, which would mean that he was mayor for 42 years. Paul Grondahl's book (and its review on Amazon.com) also state that he was mayor for 42 years. This situation is complicated by the fact that Frank Harris served as mayor in 1944-45 during Corning's military service. So, what should we say in Wikipedia articles? Some articles have said 41, some have said 42, and others have said "over 40." Articles this impacts include Erastus Corning 2nd, List of mayors of Albany, New York, Albany, New York, and Erastus Corning Tower. --Albany NY 04:16, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

As I stated in the discussion on the list of mayors of Albany, New York page- the acting mayor Frank Harris should not be counted as serving a term as mayor, he was ACTING mayor for a reason. Congress passed a law allowing mayors to serve in the military without losing their position, so as far as Congress was concerned Corning continued as mayor and was still referred to as such. Just as when a President or Governor goes under for surgery and the lt governor or vice president becomes acting president/acting governor we dont go adding them to the lists of that office each and every time.
