Equilibrium mode distribution

The equilibrium mode distribution of light travelling in an optical waveguide or fiber, is the distribution of light that travels in the medium without any disturbance or leakage/gain.
The equilibrium length is the length of multimode optical fiber necessary to attain the equilibrium mode distribution for a specific excitation condition. Equilibrium length is sometimes used to refer to the longest such length, as would result from a worst-case, but undefined, excitation. Other terms for equilibrium length are equilibrium coupling length and equilibrium mode distribution length.
