I have added a number of items to this page, and hope to continue to improve the article in the future. I ask all that know about these issues to help in this effort. Why did Provoost resign in 1801, and why did his resignation not result in the election of a new diocesan? The biographical article on him is quite a stub--some of this material could also do well there, I think.--Bhuck 20:04, 14 June 2006 (UTC)

I totally agree regarding his biographical article - and hope to expand it when I have more information. As to his resignation, I have not found any information as to why he resigned. He was 59 at the time - and did live for 14 more years, so ill health seems unlikely, but it is possible. As I continue to review the sources, I will add this information, if found, to his bio. As to the reason his resignation did not result in a new diocesan bishop, it is my understanding that during that time (unlike today) a Bishop once consecrated may resign his duties but not his office. Although I need to check that. The more interesting issue will come up with Bishop Onderdonk, who was suspended. The accounts of that are very confused. A very large battle occurred within the Church, with Onderdonk accused of immoral conduct (the touching of married women). There is much to suggest that the charges were manufactured with the real problem being his embrace of the Oxford movement and ordination of "papists." Through this it appears that most New York Anglicans supported him, but other US Bishops, voting along Anglo-Catholic/ Evangelical lines, suspended him. His Brother, the Bishop of Pennsylvania, was also suspended, reasons still unclear. I am reading numerous publications of the era to try to get to the bottom of this very interesting episode, which has parallels today. Franklin Moore 20:39, 14 June 2006 (UTC)
