Shade, a young Silverwing bat dares another Silverwing to glimpse the sun with him.

It is the first episode in the series and the first apperance of Shade. Fireflies fly past the screen, then it shows a beetle warming up its wing. Soon, the beetle flies away. Shade comes and tries to catch it. He chases the beetle (navigated by echolocation). After a minute, the beetle uses a trick on Shade. Shade is tricked but sees the beetle flying away. He chases it again, but it is caught by Chinnok, a fellow Silverwing newborn. Chinnok's friends, Breeze and Todd, comment him, and tease Shade. Angry at them, Shade rushes in. There, Chinnok starts teasing Shade. Chinnok then asks "Now where was before I was forced to eat yet anothor Tiger Moth?"

Breeze soons answers, saying that he was talking about his father. When Chinnok stops talking, Todd says "That's bigger than you said before." Shade interrpts the conversation. Again, Chinnok teases Shade. Breeze soon says it getting late and that the sun will be coming up soon. When Shade says he's going to see the sun, Chinnok, Breeze, and Todd bump into each other. Shade then says that Chinnok should join him.

Breeze warns them that the owls will kill them. But Breeze and Todd fly away before long. Chinnok, while waiting for the sun, gets scared, and soons flies away. Shade stays, while looking at the sun, gets attacked by an owl. Shade gets off the branch and flies away. Soon, Shade hides in a log. The owl crashes its feet into the log. After a moment, Shade flies into Tree Haven.

Ariel, Shade's mother flies down to Shade saying "Shade Cassiel Silverwing!" Worried she hugs him with gladness and anger. Todd, and Breeze fly down and tell Shade that Chinnok's going to be grounded for a week, only to be told (by their mothers) to go roost. Ariel soon tells Shade to go roost, too. Mercury, the messenger comes and tells Shade and Ariel to go meet up to the council. There, Shade meets Freida, and the other elders. After the meeting, Freida takes Shade to the Echo Chamber. After a moment or two (because of Mercury) they leave.

Up at the top of Tree Haven, Brutis, commander of the owls tells Freida to hand over Shade. But Freida refuses to hand him over, for this reason Brutis says that they will have to face the consequences. One of the elders yell "Look!" Freida looks and sees owls holding fire. She warns the Silverwings that they must run. Shade and Ariel try to put out the flames, but soon a flaming log falls on Ariel. Shade tries to pull the log, but can't. Chinnok comes, and they both pull the log, the log moves, and the fly away. Shapes come out of the fire. Soon, an crying eye pops up on the screen.
