[edit] Synopsis
With the team trapped in an abandoned bunker and creatures from past and future closing in, one of the members must make the ultimate sacrifice...
[edit] Plot
Following straight from the previous episode, Cutter and the team are trapped in an abandoned Ministry of Defence bunker, surrounded by creatures they have faced from the past few episodes. Leek, meanwhile, is revealing the control he has, and unleashes a Silurian scorpion at a local beach. He also contacts Lester, warning that he has 12 more creatures stationed at similar locations, and that unless Lester calls off the search for him, he will release them one-by-one, to cause nation-wide chaos. Stephen is called by Lester to deal with it, still unaware of Cutter and the team's predicament. After it has killed at least two people, Stephen finds it and harpoons it against the jetty. The harpoon goes straight through the scorpion, attaching it to the jetty. With the scorpion captured, Stephen phones the ARC, telling Lester to "come pick it up whenever you want."
At the base, Nick learns the full extent of the plan: Leek believes that humanity is doomed and that the only people who will survive and prosper are those who have the backing of the future predators. His vision is that his army of creatures will make him the most powerful man in a new and troubled world. Helen, however, needs a base from which to conduct her research on the anomalies, seeking to test how altering the past and present through the anomalies can affect the future. Helen releases Nick from his cell after she overhears a conversation between him and Jenny Lewis stating he still has feeling for her. Helen explains her theory to Nick: that the anomalies are there to help humanity create its own future.
Later, Caroline is let into Connor's and Abby's cell. When she is questioned by Abby as to where Rex is, the two fight, punching and kicking each other. Eventually Abby slams Caroline against a wall, but Caroline uses her superior strength to pin Abby down. Abby bites her and she lets go, and the two continue to grapple briefly before Connor separates them.
Leek interrupts their conversation, having locked the rest of the team (Connor, Abby, Jenny and Caroline) in a feeding chamber. He sends a sabre tooth cat on the rest of Cutter's team, Abby realising it is the same one that killed Valerie in a previous episode. Cutter begs Leek to stop, but he refuses. In desperation, Nick turns to Helen to back him up, but Leek berates Helen, stating no-one gives orders but him. In desperation, Cutter pours water on Leek's computer system. When Leek uses his laptop to restart the system, it crashes, due to the virus Connor implanted in the Anomaly detector. The creatures are released from their cages and begin to run rampant through the base. Leek makes his escape, as does the rest of the team, who escape when the Smilodon misses its attack and electrocutes itself. They escape by causing one of the two Scutosaurus to attack and kill two of Leek's men. A third guard shoots Rex, but Jenny shoots the guard. Connor asks "Where did you learn to shoot like that?!" to which Jenny replies "Some of my friends liked ponies, I preferred clay pigeons!"
Helen helps Nick get away from the guards, but he refuses to accept her help, stating that he is turning her over to Lester. Helen refuses to believe he will do this, stating she heard him talking how he felt for her, but Nick retorts his speech was an act, meant to trick Helen into releasing him. However, before he can force Helen to lead him out of the base, he is attacked by a guard- Helen escapes during the struggle. Cutter is also chased by a future predator. He reaches the feeding chamber, where he confronts the creature and kills it by removing its neural clamp when it is distracted by his blood. Cutter is then confronted by Leek, who reveals he has an army of predators, 'his very own Praetorian Guard' to make him untouchable. At that moment, Lester calls, telling Leek that the virus that crashed his system also sent the ARC the location of the creatures and of Leek's base. In a desperate bid to regain control, Leek tries to engineer a hostage situation, threatening to order the future predators to kill Cutter unless Lester backs off. Cutter tells Lester he is not important, and Lester agrees, stating that "the safety of the public is paramount". As Leek counts down, Cutter places the neural clamp in a circuit board, short-circuiting all the neural clamps and releasing the predators from Leek's control. As Cutter makes his escape, the future predators descend from the ceiling en masse and surround Leek. At the ARC, Lester and his staff grimly watch as Leek is torn apart.
Meanwhile, trapped in a room in the base, Helen calls Stephen, claiming that Lester has kidnapped her and that Nick and the rest of the team are dead. She tells the distraught Stephen to find her. As she waits for Stephen, there is a commotion outside the room. Although the two creatures are not seen, the sounds confirm them as a Smilodon and a Raptor. The Raptor wins. However, at the base, Stephen spots Nick wandering the corridors and realises Helen was lying to him. The three of them devise a scheme to prevent the creatures escaping: they will draw them to the main feeding chamber and trigger the alarm the creatures associate with food. Once the creatures are inside, they will lock the door, leaving the creatures to kill each other. However, in the chamber, they are attacked by a Deinonychus, and the external door lock is destroyed in the struggle. Helen explains that with the outer door lock destroyed, the chamber can now only be sealed from the inside, but whoever goes back will likely be killed . As Cutter prepares to go back and seal the room, Stephen punches him in the face and locks himself inside with the creatures. Nick desperately begs Stephen to open the door, but Stephen tells him that he's doing this one, and tells Nick to keep Abby and Connor out of trouble. Nick watches through the door's window in horror as Stephen is surrounded and inevitably killed by the creatures. As Nick sinks into despair, weeping at the death of his friend, Helen quietly slips away.
Later, the team are attending Stephen's funeral. As the team turn to walk away, Jenny invites Cutter to go out for a drink with her, Caroline makes her peace with Connor and Abby reaches for Connor's hand, but they are disrupted by Lester who tells them that another anomaly has opened. Shortly before joining his comrades, Cutter takes out a picture of him and Claudia, rips it into pieces, throws it away and leaves. As they depart to face this anomaly, Helen appears and places an ammonite among the flowers on Stephen's grave, promising him that "things change". She looks up and smiles knowingly at The Cleaner (killed several weeks earlier while attempting to capture a scorpion and by a baby Deinonychus), who then is joined by more than a dozen different versions of himself, suggesting that Helen has either found some manner of cloning technology in the future, or has meddled sufficiently with the timeline, and that she plans to resurrect Stephen through this.
