Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina

The Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina is a diocese of the Episcopal Church in the United States of America comprising 24 counties in the eastern part of the state of South Carolina. It is one of the nine original dioceses of the Episcopal Church. Established in 1706, the diocese includes 76 congregations, 25,830 baptized members, and 178 clergy licensed or canonically resident.^[1]

The Cathedral of St. Luke and St. Paul and Diocesan House in the see city of Charleston, in the lower Westside on Coming Street. The 13th bishop, Edward L. Salmon, Jr., has announced his retirement and Bishop Suffragan William J. Skilton resigned effective December 31, 2006. The diocese is a member of the Anglican Communion Network.

On 16 September 2006, the Very Rev. Mark J. Lawrence was elected 14th bishop on the first ballot.^[2] However, Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori declared the election void. In a March 16 letter to the standing committee, she declared that there were "canonical deficiencies" in several consents received from dioceses.^[3] The diocesan standing committee, which disputed Jefferts Schori's decision, called a special convention and on 4 August 2007, elected Lawrence again. He was the only candidate.^[4]
