Ephimeris

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ephimeris was a Greek newspaper published by Georgios Vendotis in Vienna from June 1784. It is the oldest known Greek newspaper[1].

It published 8 issues and then ceased publication after government pressure[1].

In 1790 the Pouliou brothers (one of them being Georgios Markides Pouliou) restarted publication, in the Greek, Serbian, and German languages, after negotiating the government's approval[1].

The newspaper promoted human rights, the French Revolution, and many revolutionary texts of Rigas Feraios[1].

In 1797 Georgios Markides Pouliou was arrested, together with Rigas Feraios, and so the newspaper ceased to exist[1].

It has been since reprinted by modern Greek presses, and its original issues can be seen in various public libraries in Greece[1].
