- Search on eol.org for the subject you want.
- Click on the correct link to go to the subject's page.
- The page URL should look like http://www.eol.org/taxa/#######, where "#######" indicates a number.
- Copy ONLY that number
- Add to the external links section the text:
- * {{eol|#######|label}}
- where "#######" is the number you've copied, and (optional) "label" is the subject's name, if it differs from the page title.

- Search for Nicrophorus americanus on eol.org. You'll get to this page: http://www.eol.org/taxa/17128463
- Copy "17128463" and then add this number as the first parameter:

Typically this is a list item in the external links section (even if there is only one link), so you should add "*" in front.
