Environmental Protection Authority of Western Australia

The Environmental Protection Authority of Western Australia ("EPA") is a statutory authority within the Government of Western Australia and is the primary provider of independent environmental advice to Government. Its role also includes formulation of environmental protection policies as well as conducting environmental assessments for planned resource development projects.
The Authority consists of five members, who are not public servants, and includes a full-time chairman. They are appointed by the Governor of Western Australia on the recommendation of the Minister for the Environment. Unusually for a government authority, under the Environmental Protection Act 1986, neither the Authority nor its Chairman are subject to the direction of the Minister.
The Authority recently released its State of the Environment Report: Western Australia 2007 following similar SoE reports in 1992 and 1998.[1]
