Envigado

Envigado is a city of Colombia in the Antioquia State, located at the south of the Aburrá Valley and belonging to the Metropolitan Area of Medellín. It has limits at its north with El Poblado, Medellín; at its south with Sabaneta; at its east with El Retiro and Caldas and at west with Itagüí. The origin of its name is unknown, but some researchers associated it with "beam" (viga in Spanish). It is also the city of the Colombian philosopher Fernando González. His house, Otraparte, is today a cultural center and museum dedicated to his memory and works.
Envigado is also famous for keeping the paisa traditions and architecture, one of the best standard of living in Colombia and for its promising football team: Envigado Futbal Club.

The population at the 1993 census was 115,484; in 2005 it had a population of 175,337 inhabitants.

Founded in 1775, Envigado was declared a municipality in 1814. Its name comes from the large trees that were once found there and which were used for the rafters (vigas) in constructing houses.

The principal economic activity is manufacturing ,Envigado counts on a great and modern industry. Between the most outstanding based companies it is the factory of assembly Renault - Toyota. (Sofasa). In addition, Envigado counts on the central seat of the important Almacenes Exito, the greater chain of supermarkets of Colombia , particularly textiles, soaps and perfumes..

Envigado is home to a football (soccer) team called Envigado Fútbol Club which plays in the Colombian second division.
