Ensign Records

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ensign Records was started in 1976 by Nigel Grainge and Chris Hill as an independent Phonogram subsidiary. Ensign had its first hit with The Boomtown Rats in 1977 and in '78 by a lesser known artist named Robert Johnson. In 1983 Grainge sold The Boomtown Rats to Phonogram to get its complete freedom. In 1984 Grainge decided to sell his label to Chrysalis Records. When EMI purchased Chrysalis in 1991, Grainge decided to leave his record label.

Today Ensign remains a largely unused part of the EMI Chrysalis division.
