Talk:English public school football games

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

i think we need a separate section on football in poetry

If it is public school related, yes by all means. Otherwise a separate article would be the way to go. Grant65 | Talk 18:37, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Public school

Several points, firstly "public school" in Scotland does NOT traditionally refer to private schools, this is an import from over the border. Secondly, it would be worth including mentions of Charterhouse's involvement in the development of Soccer. A long standing myth of soccer is that it has always been a working class game - in actual fact, many of the earliest players were from English private school backgrounds, and Oxbridge!!! --MacRusgail 15:37, 20 November 2006 (UT)

Yes, you are right, and in fact most of the leading independent schools in England, but not Scotland or Ireland, play soccer, often as a major sport. Examples are Eton, Winchester, Charterhouse and Westminster. This is a nice twist in the byzantine English class system. Millbanks (talk) 18:53, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

So should we call it British private school football games? Some Poms might object ;-) I agree about soccer. Grant65 | Talk 03:37, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the comment Grant. Do you have any other ideas for what to add about Charterhouse? I am interested in their early rules but I cannot find many references. Any references to add to highlight that it was not just a working class game? I can't get that reference to Marples to come up under the references: any ideas why? By the way I lived in a number of places in Scotland for many years and was surprised by your comment about public schools. I had never been corrected for calling private schools public schools... and certainly there are plenty of them, esp in Edinburgh. (Preceding unsigned comment by User:Mafiga.)

I think you have confused my comments with MacRusgail's comments. Grant65 | Talk 14:15, 26 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] First Rugby Match

Was the first inter-schools match between Cheltenham and Rugby or between Marlborough and Clifton? The article is unclear. Millbanks (talk) 09:06, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
